Getting Ready!

Yesterday we had our first cyclocross clinic for the club /team I belong to Blue Sky Velo, known at this time of year as the Blue Sky Nation.  Our clinic was hosted by me, the cross captain, and Amy Dombroski (Luna) who brought her fine skills and humor along to teach us all kinds of things. As you may have suspected we used Cross Propz to set up some practice jumps on a big lawn-like field, the Propz performed flawlessly even when slammed into at 20MPH…they bounced right back! Makes the inventor proud!

Some of the folks in attendance had never ridden on grass or gravel, but want to try cross, some folks are well established in the cross scene here in Colorado, I noticed that the experienced folks gravitated toward the newbies and helped them out, assuaged their fears a little and let them know we all went thru what they were experiencing. Amy D. was absolutely the best choice for the clinic, as she not only went over the basics, but was happy to share some of her little tricks for quicker starts, dismounts and remounts among many others. Some of the experienced racers came to me after, just beaming that they had learned things that they were just  itchin’ to try. By the time the clinic was over, it seemed like everyone had their ‘game face’ on!

The weather was anything but cross-like….it was in the high 90′s clear and hot, the attendance was huge, indicating that these folks are serious about learning the sport and perfecting their skills. If nothing else, a couple of hot laps trying to put together all that was learned, certainly shows where work is needed. I need lots of practice in just about all aspects, but not for one moment did I feel like this was something I couldn’t accomplish, as a matter of fact, it really just magnified the areas that I do need work in. If your club or team or bike shop has a clinic or two scheduled , check it out, you’ll learn something, if you don’t learn a thing you can help the new guy out.  It seems like there is always another perspective to be heard, a technique to try out, what works for you may not work for me, but I may have a way to do things that you haven’t thought of. A clinic is a great place to try this stuff out.

One of my teammates wrote afterward to thank me for putting on the clinic, saying that because of it  he was totally jazzed for the season to start…….mission accomplished!

My thanks go to all that attended and especially Amy Dombroski, a real PRO in all aspects!

Thanks for reading, until next time,

Paul
